Confidence: Key to Embracing New Opportunities
This month, one idea kept returning, no matter who we spoke to.
Communication.
Not simply the words we choose, but whether the people we’re trying to reach truly hear them.
It wasn’t social media that made me think about that this month. It was sitting behind the microphone at Dune Radio, learning that saying something clearly and communicating something well are often two very different things. Then, speaking to more than 150 business leaders at the Sefton Economic Forum, I realised the presentation wasn’t what stayed with me. It was the conversations afterwards. The introductions. The encouragement. The reminder that the most meaningful opportunities almost always begin with people talking to one another.

Perhaps that’s what I’ve been noticing across Southport too.
For years we’ve talked about the town’s potential. Yet this month it feels as though something is shifting. Creative organisations, independent businesses, volunteers, charities, schools and local people have always been here. Increasingly, it feels like they’re beginning to find one another.
That thread quietly runs through Issue 17.

It begins with The Open Championship returning to Royal Birkdale. While the world’s attention falls on the golf, we ask a different question. What do visitors discover when they step beyond the course? And what does seeing Southport through fresh eyes remind us about the place we call home?
That sense of momentum continues with one of the most exciting developments we’ve covered this year. The new Warehouse Arts Centre is far more than another building opening its doors. It feels like another piece of a much bigger picture, creating the kind of creative connections that help shape the identity of a town.

Confidence also appears throughout this month’s edition, but perhaps not in the way you’d expect. One article asks a deceptively simple question. When was the last time you did something for the first time? It explores why confidence rarely arrives before action, and why the opportunities that change us most often begin with feeling slightly unprepared.
Alongside those features, you’ll find the return of Launchpad, supporting young adults as they take their next steps into employment, a wonderful new community initiative through Swish & Stitch, thought-provoking writing from pupils at Meols Cop High School, and fresh perspectives from our growing family of local contributors.
Every month, another voice joins these pages.
Every month, another piece of Southport’s story is added.
We hope you enjoy Issue 17.
