There’s something special about seeing your town show up — not just in numbers, but in spirit.

Last Sunday, Southport Football Club became more than a stadium. It was a gathering place. For families, friends, colleagues, and strangers — all there for a game, yes, but also for something much bigger.

From the moment the gates opened, there was a buzz that couldn’t be missed. The kind that makes you smile before you’ve even found your seat. Children waved flags. Old friends greeted each other with hugs. And on the pitch, two teams — blue and gold — played with heart, humour, and a shared sense of purpose.

Now, I have to admit — I wasn’t quite sure who all the celebrities were as we arrived. Suddenly, people started screaming and running towards us, and for a brief second, we genuinely thought it was us… we’d made it! Hahahaha. Alas, no. It turned out a singer had just stepped out of the car behind us. As the crowd rushed past, we realised we were just lucky to witness the excitement firsthand.

“It’s been so lovely to see so many people at the local ground cheering on and just supporting,” one supporter said.

It wasn’t about trophies or final scores. It was about connection. A town showing up for its own. A football club opening its doors and its heart.
