Experience Lightport 2026: A Free Immersive Event in Southport

Lightport Southport 2026. What to expect this weekend on Lord Street

Hi, and welcome back to Southport’s Journey. We share the quieter stories of this town, the people behind the work, and the small moments that shape how Southport feels to live in.

Lightport is this weekend, and the countdown is properly on. From Saturday 14 February to Monday 16 February 2026, Lord Street becomes a free, walk through light and sound experience running 5pm to 9pm each night.

If you have lived here long enough, you know we do big events well. But this one matters for a different reason. It is not a parade you watch and move on from. It is an experience you walk through. It is designed to feel immersive, playful, and shared. You do not need to know anything about art. You just need to turn up and follow the glow.

What Lightport actually is

Lightport is a brand new, free immersive light and sound installation produced by Lucid Creates, built as a multi sensory trail along a stretch of Lord Street. It has been designed around colour, movement, and the kind of wonder that makes people slow down without being told to.

The route is around 400 metres and split into four zones. The recommended way to do it is to walk them in order, starting at Mermaid Gardens and finishing at Town Hall Gardens near The Atkinson. Most people will spend around 30 to 60 minutes moving through it, but there is no time limit.

Why this weekend is worth it

Because February can feel long. Because half term needs something that is not another soft play booking. Because town centres need footfall and joy, not just good intentions. Lightport is a reminder that Southport can still surprise you, even if you think you have seen everything on Lord Street already.

It is also the opening sparkle for Southport 2026, the wider year long cultural calendar that is bringing new and returning events across the town. Lightport is the first big marker that says, this year is going to be busy in the best way.

How to do it without stress

Go early if you want calmer. 5pm to 6pm tends to feel more spacious than later slots at popular events, especially with families.

Start at Mermaid Gardens. The organisers recommend it for the full experience and it sets the tone properly from the beginning.

Treat it like a slow walk, not a mission. This is not about rushing to the end. It is designed to be wandered through.

If you are coming in from elsewhere, Merseyrail is pushing it as an easy train trip, with Southport station a short walk from the route.

If you only take one photo, take it of the people you are with, not the lights. The lights will still be there. The moment is the actual point.

The Southport’s Journey angle

We are not here to shout, book now, limited tickets, panic. Lightport is free, no booking, no tickets required. It is simply a good reason to head into town, walk Lord Street in a different light, and feel part of something shared.

If you go, go in the way that suits you. With kids and hot chocolates. With friends and your camera. Solo with a podcast and your own headspace. This weekend is an invitation, not an obligation.

Southport’s Journey exists to create a lasting record of the people, places and ideas shaping this town. Through print, blogs, podcasts and collaborations, we aim to build something thoughtful, useful and rooted in care.
