Finding Power Within: The Women Learning to Walk Taller in Southport

In a softly lit gym in Southport, something powerful is unfolding. It’s not just the sound of pads being struck or feet moving swiftly across the mat—it’s the quiet confidence being built in a group of local women who are showing up for themselves, week after week.

Under the expert guidance of Helen—a senior instructor with a military background and a calm, grounded presence—these women begin with movement. Kicks, jabs, and drills not only get the blood flowing but start a bigger process: building control, awareness, and a deeper trust in themselves.

But this isn’t about fighting. It’s about finding strength. One participant says it best:

“This isn’t about becoming a fighter—it’s about becoming strong in yourself.”

What makes these classes stand out is the care in every detail. From learning how to stay calm in high-pressure situations, to slow, thoughtful breakdowns of self-defence techniques, it’s a space where every woman—regardless of fitness level or background—is supported.

A group of women practicing martial arts in a brightly lit gym, wearing matching uniforms and focused on their training.

These sessions are tailored with sensitivity and realism, especially as the town continues to process recent local tragedies. Helen’s message is clear:

“We don’t teach aggression, we teach control. We’re not turning anyone into a fighter—we’re showing them they already have the power. It’s just about unlocking it.”

And for many, that unlocking is transformational. One woman, once fearing she’d be wheelchair-bound due to fibromyalgia and nerve damage, now trains regularly and grows stronger each week. Her teenage daughter? Now a black belt.

This is what resilience looks like.
